Visio upgrade?

John Smith

I have .Net 2003 Enterprise with Visio and I have found a Visio file I
cannot open.
I was amazed to find on the MS website information saying that Visio 2003 in
..Net is really Visio 2002.

Can I upgrade to Visio 2003? Will I loose the coupling with .Net 2003 and
the code generation options?

thank you

If you upgrade to Visio 2003 you loose the database roundtrip capability!
No way to create a database or post ER changes you make to a database
drawing in Visio 2003. Sad. It means you have to have BOTH installed and
suffer the consequences of a long delay when switching between the two
versions.

Sigh.

Yes, you can have them both but it is a pain in the ass. I installed Visio
2003 along with the rest of Office 2003 and then installed the .Net version
of Visio in a separate directory. Then I have to explicitly open the proper
version of Visio before I open a document. That part is no big deal. The
problem is when going from one version to another, Visio must re register
itself. This means you MUST have the CD's readily at hand OR when you
install the two versions of Visio, allow the installer to leave the install
files on disk. Either way it takes a moment or six for the registry updates
to complete while you watch an hourglass. It's probably 15 - 20 secs on my
machine, but enough it makes me pause when I am about to open a file and
think "Do I really need to look at that file" and carefully plan any work
that might involve both versions of the app.

My UI designer is using Visio 2003 and I need to use the .Net version to
maintain my data schemas, so the situation rears it's ugly head a lot.

I have a question and the system (.NET? , USENET? I'm new to all this.) won't
let me start a new thread to ask it. I have an evaluation version of Visio
2003 that I won't use untill next semester. I have installed it, but not
activated it. I can't find any information on how long the evaluation
version works before it is debilitated. Can anyone tell me (1) About Visio
Eval 2003, or (2) How to post to these groups.
