VLookup accesses half the text in a field?

I have specifications in one file and results in another.
When the results file looks up data in the specifications file only half the
text in a long filed is displayed when the source is inactive. If I load the
source file at the same time then all the data is displayed. is this a
"feature" of excel 2003 it never happened in excel 97?
