I am a long-time OneNote user and am familiar with the general operation of
the cache (I used to post here more frequently).
But now I have a similar problem as someone who posed yesterday (strange!)
but I have no cache to follow the instructions given. Here's what happened:
1) I had closed many notebooks and I had OneNote optimize the cache, which
it seemed to do fine. I closed out of OneNote with the intention that I
would restart and delete the large (4 gig) "old" cache.
2) OneNote closed but would not restart from the Start Menu, it said another
OneNote was running. OneNote did not appear in the task manager, so waited
for a while but then I restarted windows.
3) After restarting windows, OneNote still did not start. On the screen I
got a corrupted rectangle where the splash screen would go, but the splash
screen never materialized. After many minutes of waiting, I again restarted
windows. (As before, OneNote never appeared in the windows task manager).
4) OneNote started after the reboot, recognized there was an issue, and gave
me some startup options. I presumed the cache was corrupted and figured it
simply rebuild the cache from the source notebooks. So I had OneNote delete
the Cache.
5) OneNote started with no Notebooks open.
6) I tried to open the appropriate notebook and got the "waiting to sync"
error.
I'd rather recover from the notebook files than what is on the backups which
are more than a week old.
