website directory tree question

I am looking for some advice on the contruction of the directory tree, not
the design or layout of the site.
I will have multiple pages and pictures. When I start building my website, is
it best to have all my htm pages in the root directory? Should I have a
folder called images and have all the images in that folder in designated
folders? For example images/family and/or images/friends, and or
images/vacations? I hope that explains what I am thinking.
Or would it be best to have folders for each page and have the pictures and
htm's in the appropriate folders?

I am looking for the easiest way to organize the contruction of the site and
be able to easily find the files I may need to locate.

I hope this makes since to someone, I know the people on here have a lot
more experience with this type thing than me.

Thanks for the advice...tcoop

It all depends on how large your site is, but, generally speaking, I like to
have an easy structure where I can find things and better manage the web.

Rather than having everything in the root, you could indeed set up folders
for categories. And, even put an images folder within each category.

Agreed. And I'd say that it doesn't matter so much exactly how you organize
your files, just that you have *some* kind of system, and that it's 100%
consistent. The bigger the site gets, the more important this is.

With smaller sites, I usually just put the HTML files in the root directory,
along with the external style sheet, and images in their own directory.

On bigger sites, I have sub-directories with image folders (and sometimes
other supporting files) within them.

Thanks for the advice, what you say makes since. Just be consistant with
what i do. I will have a rather large site. Does it matter how deep a
directory goes? Do applets have to be in the root directory or just in the
folder that has the actual script? Sorry for all the questions, this is a
learning experience for me...Thanks again for all the help....tcoop

Applets and script are two different things.

applets = java virtual machine which is no longer installed on new machines.

scripts = javascripts. javascripts can be in any directory as long as the path to the
source file is correct.
