what does the extension .ldl mean?

Wehn I open the database I created. there's always another file that shows
up with the extension ".ldl". What does it mean and what does it do.

Actually that's ldb. It's the file that Jet, the database engine
underneath Access, uses to control the locking of the objects and
records within the database for multiple users.
