What is the purpose of the "journal" fields?

Although Outlook offers a variety of fields that have distinctive
functions, I can't figure out what some of them do.

For example, what is the purpose of the "journal", a boolean, field?

it indicates whether or not the item (or related items) is journaled. The
only possible choices are 0 and 1.
