What version is Visio for VS 2003 Enterprise Architect?

Message put up on MS Visio Forum web site:

Subject: What version is Visio for VS 2003 Enterprise Architect?

We use Windows XP and have Office XP (but the ver of Visio could be later as
it was installed separately.). We are assuming we have Visio 2003, but MS
does not tell us the year, only the numbers below.

We had Visio installed by our company, Help About only shows 10.0.525, and
we got VS.NET Enterprise Architect, with Visio (the ver says 10.0.2705).
Now, we cannot open charts created by others in the 10.0.525.

Wouldn't our VS.NET 2003 Visio be later than the other version?

As I mentioned I do not know the "year" version of either copy, since help
does not tell me. I can't get a service pack download determined, because
you have to go into Office help as 2000, 2002, 2003, Office XP, type of
things.

Why can't we open the chart?

What are the correct "year" versions of the above numbers?

Thanks.

version 10 is really visio 2002. It was renamed v2003 EA when it went into
visual studio. The real v2003 and v2005 EA (which was just formally
released) are version 11 and cannot be opened by lower versions....

Ok. That answers part of it.
We all had 10.0.525 installed as a department.

A few of us developers got VS.NET 2003 Ent Arch with a Visio CD.
I now see on the CD it says "Visio for Ent Arch 7.1", but it ver # is
10.0.2705.

If they're both 10.0, why can't .2705 open .525?
How does the 7.1 fit in?

Problem is that the .2705 person cannot open charts created by the .525*
person.

* I have not officially determined, yet, exactly what version the person who
created the chart has, but one of our regular staff had the .525 version, so
I assumed that the rest of the dept has that also.

Ok, but, I do not have any "year" references showing in either version of
Visio.
I understand you say that EA 2003 is Visio 2002 (10.0.2705).
But, does that mean the the dept users must be on Visio 2003 proper?
If so, then I am still stuck as to why the dept users have 10.0.525.
That sounds like an 'earlier' version, rather than later.

I do understand that if EA 2003 is Vis 2002, then the user that created the
chart, that we cannot read, must have Visio 2003 proper. I know we don't
have anything newer than 2003 for Office programs. Is this right?

All Microsft have an internal version number that differs from the one on
the package. It makes it easier for the programers to determine if they are
dealing with an older or newer version.

Visio 2002 is Visio 10
Visio 2003 is Visio 11
next Visio will be Visio 12

Thanks, but we are not hitting the question.
I saw that you said that 2002 was ver 10.

But, my copy EA 2003 is 10.0.x
And, the deptmntl copy, for which we don't have a year, is also 10.0.x

But, the EA copy cannot read a dept copy, chart.

Do you know why?
You are saying they are the same version.

If both versions are the same, there should be no problem. When you look at
the about box within Visio it should show both Visio 2002 and (10.xxxx)

As far as file formats are concerned there is no difference between 10.0.525
and 10.0.2705. Both are Visio 2002.

In your original message you mentioned
Now, we cannot open charts created by others in the 10.0.525.
Is it possible that the "others' use Visio 2003 (11.xxxx)?

Thanks for that info.
The .525 person shows 2002 in their help/about.
I show Visio Enterprise Architect, with no year showing.
But, we both do have 10.0.x

I will have to investigate further, pinning down the exact person's version
who created the chart that our EA version cannot open.

Ok, I checked with the user* who I installed EA in place of what they had.
They believe that they had Visio 2003 (even tho another staff member has
2002, for sure). That can be the only reason that they cannot now open the
chart.

We're going to request a re-install of 2003 if they want it. Will have to
decide if they will need EA features.

M

Michael Miller

Thanks, but they're not going to spring for VS 2005.
We are going to use VS 2003 fairly lightly, mostly for its Reporting
Services capability. Maybe with a VB.NET front end.
