what would be the best upgrade from office 97

A few months ago I upgraded my windows 98 to XP, but I
still have office 97. Some emails sent as a word document
or excel spreadsheet I cannot open.What office version i
should use to get a later version of word and excel

Office 2003 is the most current version available widely at retail, although
you may be able to still find Office XP. However, for the improvements, I
would use Office 2003.
