Whole document's format changes with highlighted.

Hi, there:
I am using MS Word 2000 on an XP machine.
I found a strange behavior of word documents when editing.
I highlight some sentence of the document and then change the format, then
the whole document's format changed with the highlighted. I have to press
undo, then, only the highlighted portion keep the changed format.
Anyone has idea about how to fix this problem?
