why am i suddenly getting a thumbs.db file on all files

I have started to get thumbs.db file on all files and don't know how to stop
this. Also documents are now listied with.doc , never used to be. Please
can anyone help?

Your thumbs.db files have always been there - it's just that you haven't
seen them. They are Hidden files and, by default, well, hidden. Although you
can delete them harmlessly, it is pointless as they will get recreated. If
you don't want to see them (and other hidden files) change the options in
Windows Explorer.

Thumbs.db is created when you have Display set to thumbnails instead of
list of details, etc.. It's just an index of the images. HTH. You can
delete it without harm but it'll come back next time you set the View to
thumbnail.
