Why are some menu items not working Visio 2007 (activated)?

Frustrated. Visio 2007 activated. Many menu items don't work. Nothing happens
when I double-click any of the shapes.

First of all do you have a document open.
menu File -> New

secondly, there is very little in Visio that responds to
double-clicks, just a single click will do for most things.
(except for putting a shape on a drawing, which is drag and drop)

Understood. I tried this from the drawings document. I have a UML class
shape on the drawing, but when I double-click it (as the instructions in the
Help text state) to open the UML Class Properties dialog box, I get nothing.
When I right-click the shape on the diagram and click Display Shape
Options... from the menu, I get nothing.

If I am doing something wrong, can you point me in the right direction ? I
am trying to create class diagrams for some java programs I am writing, but I
cannot add the necessary text to the diagrams at the moment.

Any help you, or anyone else, can provide is appreciated.

Is the UML menu showing on the menu bar? As Al said, do you have Visio
Pro, is this a diagram that you created on this same version of Visio
or did it come from elsewhere. If you have only the Standard version
and the file was created in Pro then that would explain your symptoms.

Make sure you activated Visio, in the newer versions if you have a retail
license (not volume) and don't activate Visio you'll get 50 grace launches
to use the full functionality and after that it goes into Reduced
Functionality Mode. Most things are locked out, can't save, print, etc...
You can only open files and look at them pretty much.

In Visio click on Help and Activate Product. Then activate over the
Internet if you have a working Internet connection.
