Why can't I use edit picture?

My computer was recently updated with Office 2003. Before the upgrade I
could insert a picture from a file, then right click on it and edit picture.
Now when I do this the edit picture feature is grayed out. Do I have to
insert the picture a different way in order to use this feature now? The
pictures I insert are bitmaps.

If by "Edit/Picture" you mean Word's internal picture editor, then you can pull
this command from Tools/Customize/Commands, in the Drawing category and drop it
in a toolbar. Start the picture editor by clicking on the tool.

However, it's not certain that this is what you're looking for. Unfortunately,
you mention neither which version of Office you had previously, nor the name of
the application that started when you chose "Edit picture" or the what you used
it for. FWIW, some earlier versions of Office came with the "Photo editor" (or
something like that), that Word could hook into to work with graphics files.
This isn't available anymore in Office 2003. But there is the "Paint" program
that's part of Windows; it can edit bitmaps.
