Why do two MSP tasks with total duration < than a day span > day?

I have two short tasks that total less than 8 hours. Why does the second
task span into the following day?

I'm using a chain of SF dependent tasks so that changes to the final
milestone in the sequence cause all the precursor tasks to reschedule
automatically. The problem noted is throwing the schedule off for
intermediate tasks by a day.

Go to tools menu / options and set the date format to one which shows hours.
You will be able to see what is actually going on with the tasks. My guess
is that you have some tasks which are starting mid-day rather than the start
of the day.

There is an easier way to do what you are doing without the use of SF
dependencies, simply go to the "Project" menu, select project information
and set the schedule to schedule from project finish. This will change the
constraint type for future tasks from "as soon as possible" to "as late as
possible".

Note that this approach removes any sort of buffer you have on non-critical
tasks, so if you execute based on this schedule you will be increasing your
chance of missing your completion date.

Another way of doing this which is even better is to simply define a
barstyle which spans from late start to late finish. You can also display
the late start and late finish dates.
