Why does it take so long for my messages to get sent?

I sometimes have 8 messages stacked up waiting to be sent. What's going on?
And, I have to keep that window open, or the messages stop "sending."

You have a slow connection? You are using HTML instead of plain text?
Your ISP has a bad server?
