Why does my documents folder occasionally delete itself?

I recently updated to XP Home and connected to ADSL.
I have had 3 occasions when upon switching on computer found my documents
folder is not running.
When I looked in the recycle bin the folder was in there.
Upon restoring folder I was able to access documents again.
Is this something to do with the way I shut down the computer
