Why does unselected text get overwritten?

I'm using Word 2003. I select the last two words in a paragraph,
excluding the period at the end. When I type, I expect the new text
to replace the two selected words, excluding the period at the end.
Instead, the period at the end disappears along with the two selected
words. This behaviour is unlike any other text editor or word
processor I have used in the past. Can it be avoided?

Thanks.

Tools > Options > Edit - if 'Overtype mode' is checked that would
cause the symptom you describe.

Thank you, gm6trs. I will be getting back into documentation this
week, and will give it a try.
