Why does word close when i'm only closing the file?

When working in word 2003 when i go to close the file word shuts down also.
Is there anyone who can help with this.

How are you closing the file? If you are using EXIT on the File menu or the
CLOSE item from Control icon on the left side of the Title bar, or the X on
the right side of the Title bar, you will close Word also.

I use the small x on the right side and i should be able to close the file
without word closing all together.any other suggestions?
