why is there a "?" in the date column (project)?

why is it that in the date colum the number of days appear with a question
mark? does this mean that it is a tentative number of days?

Yes. It means that you have not put in a duration and that the duration
there is what Project put in by default. The idea is that you should have a
way of knowing what was done by a person and what was not. You can turn it
off (tools menu/options) but I find it useful when I am building a schedule.
