why is word saving my document as a "background" ?

Word is saving my document as a "background." This means that the size is
increasing to 1.5 MB, which makes it very slow and too large to send as an
attachment. WHY?

This isn't ringing any bells with me. How do you know it's saving as a
"background"? In the File/Save As dialog box, what is selected in the File
Type list (bottom)? Which version of Word?
