Why won't Excel open after unsuccessful service pack 3 installatio

How can I remedy the problem?
I have tried and fialed three times to download and install windows update -
service pack 3. I was prompted for a CD rom or floppy that I didn't have.
The file in question was proplus.msi
Now whenever I open Excel files it starts a download sequence that is
ultimately unsuccessful...no Excel!!

Help if you can :-(
