why won't my Word program start?

I am using Windows XP. Recently my Word program refuses to start while my
other programs run fine. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Office suite
without any change to Word.

Safe mode does not work either.
Repair mode has not helped.
Reinstalling into a different directory has not helped.

What to do next?
