winmail.dat

When I attach a file (.pdf/.doc) and send to someone using
a more recent version of Outlook (I use 2000) the
attachment is being converted to a .dat file. Any ideas?

Use HTML or Plain Text formatted mail instead of Rich Text. You can change
that in Tools-> Options-> tab Mail Format
