Word 2000 problems with Normal.DOT

J

Jeff

If I edit ANY macro in Word 2000, when I exit the application, Word
complains about being unable to save Normal.DOT because it thinks its in
use by another user.

Is this a known bug?

Sounds like there is a touch of cirruption or a rogue file somewhere

Close word. Navigate to the folder containing your normal.dot. Make dure
that hidden files are being shown. If there is a file in the same folder
called ~$rmal.dot, delete it. Restart Word.

If that file doesn't exist, or doesn't fix the problem, close Word, rename
normal.dot to oldnormal.dot and then restart Word.

If that doesn't fix the problem, close Word, go to Word's Startup folder and
move all add-ins out of it. Start Word, see if the problem goes away. If it
does, close Word, put one of the add-ins back, restart Word. Rinse and
repeat until you find the add-in that is causing the problem. Check the
vendor's website for an update.

Thanks Jonathan I've found it

There was a Startup template - "PDFMaker.dot" from Adobe and removing it
solved the problem.

I can't remember where that DOT file came from as I have a printer option
"Acrobat PDF Writer" installed which still works fine.

Ah, PDFMaker is a well-known troublemaker, it is a very bad neighbor to
other add-ins and macros. I quite often have to include code specifically
for the prupose of getting round PDFMaker's bad habits. Check the Adobe
website for an update.

The purpose of PDFMaker is to include hyperlinks and outline listings (which
Adobe calls bookmarks) in the PDF file. The PDFWriter doesn't do that.
