Word 2000 - Save As Error: Folder isn't accessible

I

IowaAmy

I am trying to "save as" in Word - Office 2000. I am saving to a folder on
our server. When I attempt to update a document and save as a different
name, I get the following message: "The folder 'I:\Amy's Machine\my
documents......' isn't accessible. The folder may be located in an
unavailable location, protected with a password, or the file name contains a
/ or \"

I am not using unacceptable symbols in my new file name. I can SAVE AS to
my hard drive. I cannot SAVE AS to ANY folder on the I drive. I can SAVE to
the I drive, but only if I do not change the file name. Others in my office
are not experiencing any difficulties with similar actions on the I drive. I
have not changed any word settings that I am aware of. I can open any file
I wish on the I drive.

I have this EXACT same problem as does my assistant. I've just posted in
"Word General Questions" so I'll look for answers there and here.

Have you noticed, like I have, that this has only been since the most recent
Microsoft Automatic Web Update?

OMG - You're right! I forgot that there were a bunch of updates that
occurred yesterday. Here's hoping someone knows the answer...

I am experiencing the exact same issue in a peer to peer environment
that one of our clients have. They are using Microsoft Office XP on
and XP machine and their server is running Window's 98. I am anxious
for any input you guys may find on this issue.

Are you using a mapped drive to the 'server' folder or are you using the
full UNC path? Have you tried logging in as Administrator rather than the
user to see if you can access the folder?

And another question: you're not using Norton Anti Virus, are you?

Hi TF,

I am logged in as the Administrator, although my assistant is not. I have
the same difficulty as her, and it matters not if we access the drive via a
mapped drive or through the root tree (I don't know what UNC Path means).

We DO use Norton Antivirus. Why should that make any difference?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

We have the EXACT same problem in our office:

None of us can "Save As" to a network drive, only local drive

We're using Trend Micro's PCCillin

This started right after the latest batch of web updates

My boss thinks I'm an idiot because I can't fix it.

Help!

Disable its Office Plug-in and see if that helps (it does in many cases).

Hi Suzanne,

I cannot find an "Office Plug-in" for my virus checker. (BTW, I just noticed
it's actually "Symantec Antivirus - Corporate Edition" rather than Norton
itself. But as it's the same manufacturer, I always called it Norton.)

Also, a comment, we've had the corporate edition as updated for several
years now, and never had this problem prior to the MS Web update. Anyway,
I'm open to any fix, so if you can let me know how to try to remove the
'Office Plug In' I'll sure give it a try.

Thanks

In that case (courtesy of Office MVP Beth Melton), If Norton AV was
installed at one time then the DLL for the Office Plug-in could still be
registered.

Search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details. It does
not include information on Norton CE but it will contain additional
details on the unregister command if you need them:

I had the same thing happen. It started Saturday, 2/12/05, after I
installed nine security fixes and updates from Windows Update for my XP
computer. Just today, I started uninstalling all the updates to see if that
would fix the problem, which it did. This is what I did:

I uninstalled the following Security Updates in the following order:

First batch:

KB891781
KB888113
KB873333

No change; did not fix the problem

Second Batch:

KB885250
KB687282 (this is the Cumulative Update)

Bingo!!! Removing these two fixed the problem.

So I would start with the KB686282 first to see if that works. To remove
these updates, log on as Administrator. Go to Add/Remove Programs in
Control Panel and scroll down to the update you want and click on remove.
Follow the instructions.

So far, this problem has cost me a whole day of lost wages. Thanks
Microsoft.

Hi Suzanne,

thanks for the replies, but Norton CE does not seen ti have a dll file
called officeav. I have also looked at your link page, and there is no
choice of "Options" available from which the library could be deleted. Also,
LiveUpdate does work on the computers and it is current (it's run daily).

Lastly, I do not have the problem described in the link, as we CAN open
files, we just cannot 'save as' a "modified" file. I can "Save" the modified
file, just not with a new filename. I know you're probably clear on that and
simply pointed me to a link in relation to how to remove the potentially
offending library, I thank you for that, it just seems that as that dll is
not on my computer, that's obvioulsy not the problem.

If you have any other ideas, please let me know as this is very frustrating.
Our current work flow is to save the modified document (save as) to a local
drive, and then save that new document back to the network. Certainly not
the most efficient, but at least it works.

Can you open Windows Explorer and move or copy one of these documents from
the server to your local hard drive? Can you open it from Word when it is on
your local drive?

Yes that is not a problem.

Maybe it's not perfectly clear what the problem is, or maybe you're just
troubleshooting. If it's the latter, thanks and sorry for the following. If
it's the former, let me try to clear up what the difficulty is:

Word seems to work just fine (on ALL the computers). The network seems to
work fine in all respects. The only problem arises when we open a file from
the network, modify that file, and then use "Save As" to save the modified
file with a new name back to the network. That is when the error occurs (see
IOWAAmy's first post for the error message). It does not matter if you try
to save to the same location or a new location ON THE NETWORK, you can only
save the "Originally named" file, not with a new name.

We CAN save any NEW file to the network, and we can also save a file that
has been modified FROM a different computer. It's just that if I have a file
from the network directly and then go to save that same file with a different
filename back to the network directly, that's when the error message arises.

I hope that's somewhat clearer as to the problem. If not, maybe IOWAAmy can
chime in again as she seemed to be somewhat more succint than I.

Ok. I've got it now. Let me think on this one. My initial thoughts are
either a permissions problem or Anti Virus still. But I'll give it some more
thought.

I was having the same and similar problems as all above. I followed Douglas'
instructions and remove the two updates he had pinpointed one at a time. I
discovered that the culprit is KB885250. Removing just KB855250 seems to fix
the problem. I guess I will keep on eye on this update to see if Microsoft
fixes the fix.

Douglas,

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.

It was update KB885250 that resolved the issue for me. Now the only
question is should I reinstall all the other updates that I've now deleted??

But again, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!

D

Douglas Nash

Thank you for the additional info.

As an aside, I thought I would be helpful and called MS support to report
what I found. Sheesh, what a joke. After three phone calls, all the support
people kept assuming I had a problem. When I told them that I was trying to
report a problem they had with files from Windows Update, they suggested
that I write a letter to Microsoft and tried giving me their address in
Redmond. I finally submitted a support request on the actual Windows Update
page. Hopefully, someone from Microsoft will actually see it. I think I
spent almost as much time trying to contact someone at Microsoft as I spent
actually fixing the problem.

D

Douglas Nash

You're welcome.

As for reinstalling, I guess it wouldn't hurt, but I think I am going to
wait and see if MS has anything to say.
