Word 2000 - Save As Error: Folder isn't accessible

Dick Bain

thank god I found this, I have been tearing out what little hair I have
left, there is no logic to this stupid thing.
Thankfully am putting in BSD server in next week, but the fix you
describe is a good short term solution.
;-)
(oh what fools we are for putting up with this sort of rubbish)

I have just read the posts of this group and have appreciated the
information.
I can add some interesting information and a work around but no
solution as yet.

I have a client with a WinXP Pro PC running Office XP against a Win98
peer-to-peer file server. They were have the same "File Save As"
problem as outlined above. They removed the Windows Update KB885250 as
suggested and the problem was solved for a day or two but has recently
returned (they reviewed the installed Windows updates & the KB885250
fix was NOT reinstalled).

I have a WinXP Pro PC running Office 2003 against a WinXP Pro
peer-to-peer file server. I do NOT have the problem and I DO have the
KB885250 fix installed. I tried setting up a Win98 peer-to-peer file
server in addition to my WinXP server. When I tried to open a Word
document on the Win98 server & save it back by File Save As, I DID get
the same error being discussed. So, I would say that updating Office
with patches or upgrading to Office 2003 will not resolve this problem
for others.

May I suggest another workaround for all office products but I will use

Word in this example. If you want to open a word document just so you
can copy it with a different name and work on it with that new name,
you could do the following:

1. Open Word and with the blank document showing do a File Open.
2. Find the Word document you want duplicated with a different name.
Right click on it and left click on "COPY".
3. Either go to the folder you want you want to save the file in, or
stay where you are if you want it in the same folder.
4. For example, if you are going to put it in the same location, find
some white space in the list of files and folders being displayed.
Right click on the white space and left click on "PASTE". You should
see a file created that says "Copy of yourfilename.doc". If you do not
see it, press the F5 key to refresh your dialog.
5. Right click on the "Copy of yourfilename.doc" and left click on
Rename.
6. Just rename the filename to the left of the .doc with the new name
you want to call your file and press enter.

Now you can open it and then, after modification, simply save it
instead of doing a Save As operation. This isn't as hard as it seems
once you do it once or twice and it enables you to work off of your
Win98 file server instead of using Windows Explorer to move files.

If anyone comes up with the long-term solution, please post it for all.

Thanks.

Thanks for the work around, this problem has been making me tear out
what little hair I have left.
I would say the solution is to get hold of FREEBSD or SME and put it on
any reasonable spec machine and let it chunter away happily storing
files for the dumb idiot OS

Did you observe that the Save As problem with files opened on a Serve
was not just in MS Word, but also in MS Excel? Probably with all th
Office 2000 (and Office XP?) applications

Thank you for posting the problem and for all those who identified th
Windows update as the cause. This has cost me about 5 hours o
digging to find your solution

Everyone needs to call Microsoft PSS and log this bug. The more bugs are
logged, the higher priority MS will give to resolving it. Reporting bugs
with Hotfixes is free of charge.

I'm glad to see that others are having this problem too. I'm an IT
problem solver at a small company. My boss has been yelling for 3 days
now saying we will stop using the network if I can't fix it.
We use a Win 98SE server and have about 12 Win XP users connected to it
for data access. nobody can save as in any of their work in Office XP,
(Excel, Word, PPT) They are driving me crazy blaming me for everything.
The only thing I've got them doing that you might try that works is, I
created them a local folder on there desktop where they can "Save As"
to. Then they copy and paste the documents to the server. This works
great. But it's annoying. No problems with moving files or accessing
files. only saving them to a new name or folder through Office XP. MS
needs to fix this soon!

Well, I suppose you know what you are talking about. I don't, and I doubt
others will either.

It is important when continuing a conversation in these newsgroups to reply
to a message in a thread, even your own message. This keeps the context in
most news agent programs. Here, I have no idea what "fix" you are talking
about or what the problem was with it.

T

TF

It is important that you report this as a Bug to Microsoft. Unless
sufficient users bug it, Microsoft won't fix it. They will argue (sensibly)
that Windows 98 long ceased to be supported. If sufficient pressure is put
on MS, they will have to appease the users with Windows 98.

At the same time, you can discuss with PSS your other problem. All calls
regarding bugs in Hot Fixes are free of charge.

C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB885250$\spuninst

that removes the service pack

You should be able to access this from Windows' Add/Remove Programs dialog.
Some users have mentioned a check box for "Include updates." Presumably this
refers to Windows XP (which is where the problem is). I have Windows 2000,
in which hotfixes are listed without any such check box.

O

oliverius

ok partay people, here's a step-by-step ::

go to Start > Settings > Control Pane

Click on "add/remove programs

tick "show updates" up the top, near where it says "Current Programs

scroll down, and select "Windows XP Hotfix - KB885250" - click th
"Remove" butto

you'll probably get a dialog box saying "if you uninstall this, all o
these programs may not work." just click ok

to prevent i
re-installin

reboot

in internet explorer, go to www.windowsupdate.microsoft.co

select the second option : "custom Install

when it finds that particular hotfix again, tick "hide" so it won'
download and install that so called "fix" again.

windows update should still be able to find other hotfixes as they ar
released

Has anyone heard of a fix to the KB885250 "can't SAVE AS" in Wor

Not as yet. However, if you manually connect the computers to the Windows
Update Site and chose the Custom Install Option, when it reveals KB885250,
you can choose to HIDE the update. This will allow you to turn on the
Automatic Updates again and it won't install KB885250.

When a fix occurs, if you need to install KB885250, if you choose the Custom
Install option again, it will let you unhide the update and install it.

Thanks for confirming that the Hide feature is supposed to preven

Perhaps I didn't hide KB885250 until it had already been downloaded
second time and reinstalled. I'll give it another try
