Yes. Reinstall the others.

Meanwhile, I'll talk to the Windows guys to see if they have any other
reports down to KB885250

Do you have a similar setup to PRO? A peer-to-peer network to a Windows 98
PC or something different? I'm trying to see if I can find the common factor
causing this problem. At the moment it is looking like Windows 98.

As a recap, I have a few Window's XP machines (sp2) that connect to
shared files on a Window's 98 box. They are running Office XP and
still see the same issue. I looked for the above listed Windows
Updates and could not find them on our machines??? Maybe the uninstall
of the Windows updates is not a fix-all.

On my assistants XP box, I had to check the box that says "show updates",
otherwise the updates did not show up at all. Don't know if that helps, but
if it's not checked, try that.

To add to what has previously been said: I have received confirmation that
the same problem is being reported in the German newsgroups. I am still
trying to establish if this is under investigation by MS.

I had the same problem with Win2k boxes connecting to a Win98 "server"
and uninstalling that "fix" solved the problem. Thank you!

Thanks. The confirmation will help get closer to the cause.

We are having the same problem on now 4 computers. I've loaded all the
Office Update service packs and Windows updates. Existing documents can be
saved and renamed, but new documents hang the system.

Same problem noted in a mixed Windows XP and Windows 98 environment. People
attempting to save Word documents to Windows 98 machine are greeting with
"unavailable location" error. However, there seems to be a work-around: In
Word, click File, then Save As, then change the file name to what you want
it to be, THEN connect to the Windows 98 folder you want to save the
document in and it will save. The problem we have is that people generally
go to the Windows 98 folder first, then they change the name of the document
and at that point they get the "unavailable location" error.

To shed more light on the subject:

What I see happening is that the computer thinks I'm trying to save my
document (called JOE) as a folder. When saving to my X drive, it says "the
folder X:/Joe isn't accessible...."

I am trying to save JOE on X, not save Joe on X in folder Joe (X:/Joe/Joe).
It appears to think that is what I'm trying to do.

Sorry for posting that earlier on a whole new thread. I lost this one
temporarily.

Terry,

Yes, we use a Win 98 box to store data, and we keep it updated regularly.
It's nothing fancy, stays in the closet and stores our stuff.

Just an FYI: I'm using XP on all my machines except my server, which is
running ME.

So it's not specfic to 98, but maybe there's something to the XP connecting
to a different version of Windows

Please call Microsoft PSS and log this as a bug with the HotFix. Hotfix bugs
reports are free of charge.

I was just researching this problem for someone today and came acros
this thread. I wanted to comment that we have the same situation o
Word 2000 in a mixed Windows XP (Home) and Windows 98 environment an
this same error/bug. Word 2000 is on the XP machine and the share
folder is on Win98 box. Trying to find out at the moment if an
updates have been applied. The problem started last Friday and isn'
affecting any other PCs at this time but I'm not sure if any of th
XP machine are receiving updates. Thanks everyone, this was beginin
to drive me nuts

Dwayne Ross via OfficeKB.com

I have just come across this newgroup regarding this problem and have found
it very useful.
I have also been experiencing the same problem on my network and have been
unable to "save as" under a different file name onto our Windows 98 server
since the critical updates last week.
I am running several machines on Windows XP professional and Office XP and
Office 2K. The problem was sorted by uninstalling the critical update ref
KB885250. I have reported this to microsoft in the UK, but have just been
told that it should not be affecting Office programs.
Has anyone been able to come up with any other ways to resolve this at
present.
Other wise i presume every time auto updates trys to run it will try to
install the same critical update again. Do we know if microsoft will issue
a resolution to this.

I have just read the posts of this group and have appreciated the
information.
I can add some interesting information and a work around but no
solution as yet.

I have a client with a WinXP Pro PC running Office XP against a Win98
peer-to-peer file server. They were have the same "File Save As"
problem as outlined above. They removed the Windows Update KB885250 as
suggested and the problem was solved for a day or two but has recently
returned (they reviewed the installed Windows updates & the KB885250
fix was NOT reinstalled).

I have a WinXP Pro PC running Office 2003 against a WinXP Pro
peer-to-peer file server. I do NOT have the problem and I DO have the
KB885250 fix installed. I tried setting up a Win98 peer-to-peer file
server in addition to my WinXP server. When I tried to open a Word
document on the Win98 server & save it back by File Save As, I DID get
the same error being discussed. So, I would say that updating Office
with patches or upgrading to Office 2003 will not resolve this problem
for others.

May I suggest another workaround for all office products but I will use
Word in this example. If you want to open a word document just so you
can copy it with a different name and work on it with that new name,
you could do the following:

1. Open Word and with the blank document showing do a File Open.
2. Find the Word document you want duplicated with a different name.
Right click on it and left click on "COPY".
3. Either go to the folder you want you want to save the file in, or
stay where you are if you want it in the same folder.
4. For example, if you are going to put it in the same location, find
some white space in the list of files and folders being displayed.
Right click on the white space and left click on "PASTE". You should
see a file created that says "Copy of yourfilename.doc". If you do not
see it, press the F5 key to refresh your dialog.
5. Right click on the "Copy of yourfilename.doc" and left click on
Rename.
6. Just rename the filename to the left of the .doc with the new name
you want to call your file and press enter.

Now you can open it and then, after modification, simply save it
instead of doing a Save As operation. This isn't as hard as it seems
once you do it once or twice and it enables you to work off of your
Win98 file server instead of using Windows Explorer to move files.

If anyone comes up with the long-term solution, please post it for all.

Thanks.
