Word 2000 won't shut down after exit

It appears that W2000 continues to run after I have exited the program. Once
I start Word up, if I haven't shut down my computer, Word indicates I'm on
document 12... or more, and if I insert a date field into the document it is
the date on which I originally openned Word - This could be two or three days
ago. If I restart my computer and open Word I'm back to document 1 and the
correct date. Any ideas?
