Alex

when I open up word 2000 I get an error message saying
that microsoft has encountered a problem and needs to
close, so i cannot use word 2000 at all because it
immediately closes down, at the bottom of the page before
closing there is a message there saying 'requesting virus
scan' but when i disable my norton antivirus this does
not help. I am running Windows XP.

Do you have the current virus definition for Norton? When was the last time you ran a scan? When did this problem start? You may have gotten a virus that has corrupted a file necessary to open Word.

There are several reasons why this can occur - most of them concerned with
errant add-ins or corrupt templates. Rename normal.dot, check what add-ins
you are loading and disable the Office plug-in from Norton AV (not the whole
program).
You will also need to clean-up the problems the crashes have left.
