Word 2003 Disappearing text problem

Gave a user a new pc that came with Office 2003(they had been using Office
XP). Certain documents have an issue where the document window will go
mostly blank, some text will still be visible, but not much. This happens
when doing something as routine as trying to insert a line, or even
inserting a space in a sentence. If you change the view to Normal, then
back to Print, the page reappears. If you work on the document in the
Normal view, it does not happen. Only seems to happen when working in Print
view.

I've found that this problem exists on any pc(so it's not hardware
dependent) that runs Office 2003. If you open the document on any pc
running Office XP, everything is fine. The pcs that I've tried to run it on
run anywhere from Office being completely patched to having very few of the
patches so it's not patch related.

Any ideas or help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Jeff,

In some cases it's an outdated graphics card drivers (new PCs don't always ship with 'the latest') that does this. Word has long
been a good 'torture' test for these drivers due to the constant screen updating needed for continually changing text, graphics and
layout. You may want to try turning down the graphics card acceleration to see if it makes a difference. Also check that there is
a local printer driver selected in File=>Print in Word.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, this isn't a hardware problem as it's
happening on pcs anywhere from brand new to 3 years old that are running
office 2003. On the pc where it was first noticed, I tried upgrading video
drivers, down grading video drivers, disabling hardware acceleration
completely, disabling write combining, just about anything that I could
think of. Then, I noticed that the problem exists on any pc, regardless of
age, that's running 2003. Open it with Office XP and it's fine. Something
in 2003 is causing it, just don't know what.

Thanks,

Jeff
