Word 2007 won't open

I recently installed Office Home & Student and all the programs open and run
fine except Word. When I start it, there's a blue screen except for the top
and at the bottom it says 'Running virus scan' and freezes. There's an
hourglass and the program won't open and I have to Ctl Alt Del to get out of
it. What can I do to fix this?

The virus scan message comes not from Word but from linked anti-virus
software. Checking of Word/Office documents can usually be deselected in the
AV program e.g. in Norton AV by turning off its Office Plug-in.

With some versions of the Norton product it may be necessary to unregister
the calling DLL by running the following command line from Windows > Start >
Run

regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\norton antivirus\officeav.dll"
or
regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\norton systemworks\norton
antivirus\officeav.dll"

Other AV apps eg the popular free ediition of Grisoft's AVG antivirus
software, require similar treatment.
In this instance:

regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free\avgoff2k.dll"

Office MVP Beth Melton recently reported her discovery that "If there are
any WLL add-ins in the Startup folders they will trigger this message even
if the user doesn't have any type of virus scanner enabled. Apparently, MS
is using the virus scanning engine to check for macros in WLL files and as a
result it triggers the message. Note other than checking for macros it isn't
actually performing a virus scan....One add-in I know of that still uses a
WLL is EndNote." So you might check your Word and Office Startup folders for
..wll files.

I have AVG Free and when I typed that line into Run, it came up as "specified
module could not be found." Now what? I checked the startup file for the
...wll files and there were none.

Search your hard drive for the file avgoff2k.dll which should be in the
folder indicated. Copy and paste the line

regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free\avgoff2k.dll"

into your Windows > Start > Run (changing the path if necessary to that
where the file resides on your own PC) and click OK.

It is possible you have a plug-in dll remnant from an old AV installation.
Have you ever had any other AV software installed? Norton, for example, is
supplied with a lot of PCs and is notoriously difficult to remove iof at the
end of the trial period you move on to something else - such as AVG. You can
find out how to remove the traces of the product from their support site.

If you cannot find the file, may I suggest you re-install your AV
application - the most recent version is 7.5.484.

problem solved. I had to remove the Norton Anti-Virus that was previously
installed. Thank you so much.
