Word 97 page number formatting

A

Anne

I need some help with page number formatting. I followed the
instructions given by Suzanne on an earlier thread, but I have had some
difficulty.

I need my page numbers to start as page number 1 on what is actually
the fourth page of the document. When I follow the directions, my page
numbers start on the actual first page of the document (where I do not
want a page number) and continues throughout the entire document. Also,
the page number shows as "1" on every page, instead of continuing
chronologically... HELP! The document is about 90 pages long, but I
only want page numbers on the content pages of the document (i.e.,
physical page 4 should be page #1 and continue through about page 80 of
the document).

Hope this makes sense. I am on Word 97. My thesis deadling is
approaching and I can't seem to make this work. Your help is much
appreciated!

Doug Robbins - Word MVP - DELETE UPPERCASE CHARACT

Hi Anne,

From the View menu, select Headers and Footers and navigate to position on
the page in which you want the page numbers to appear (either header or
footer). At that location, press Ctrl+F9 to insert a pair of filed
delimiters { }. Inside the { }, type

{ IF { PAGE } > 3 { = { PAGE } - 3 } }

using Ctrl+F9 to insert each pair of field delimiters. Press Alt+F9 as
required to toggle off the field codes and then close the header and footer
pane.

The page numbering in your document will now start with 1 on the 4th
physical page in the document.

Although Doug's method will work (and does not require a section break), the
numbers it generates will not be correct in the table of contents if you
have one (because the TOC picks up the PAGE field). If you will need a TOC,
then you will have to use a true PAGE field rather than a calculated page
number. Have you read the article I pointed you to the last time you posted
this question
(http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Formatting/NumberingFrontMatter.htm)?

Thanks Doug and Suzanne. I will give your suggestions a try tonight.
Suzanne, I tried the link you sent me, and I got the numbers to start
on physical page four, which was great, but then they were numbered 1
on page one then everypage thereafter was numbered 2...? I must be an
idiot- it seems like this should not be this difficult!! Thanks for
your help. I'll post any further problems here...

It sounds as if you must have a number of section breaks. You'll need to go
into each section and use Format Page Number to change from "Start at 1" to
"Continue from previous section." Or is it possible that you actually typed
"2" (as text, not a PAGE field) in one of the headers/footers?
