Word Art

I have two questions concerning Word Art.

1. What does the alignment button do on the Word Art
toolbar? I have messed around with it and it appears to
do nothing.

2. When you select text and then click the Word Art
button on the Drawing Toolbar, the test is inserted in
the "enter text here" window, but after creating the word
art object, the regular text remains in the document.
Why? Also, when you then delete the regular text by
select the line and deleting, the word art deletes. BUT,
if you delete the text one letter at a time and even
delete the paragraph marker, the word art object remains.
Why? What don't I get about this? Thanks Allison

I had the same question about the alignment button. You won't see any effect
with a single line of text, but if you use one of the WordArt styles that
has more than one line, you'll see that the lines can be left- or
right-aligned or centered with respect to each other.

From your second question I think you must be using WordArt in an older
version of Word since later version insert it In Line With Text. In versions
where WordArt is a "floating" object (that is, it is in the drawing layer),
it must be anchored to a text paragraph. If you delete the paragraph it's
anchored to (without moving the anchor), you delete the WordArt. I would
suggest that instead of typing the text in the document first you just type
it directly in the WordArt dialog.
