When trying to insert a symbol or special character

"Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry
for the inconvenience." pops up and Word has to restart.

Insert symbol works fine in Excel and others, and i am able to cut and paste
symbols fromExcel into Word without problem.

I don't recall suggesting that you had a network printer. I said the problem
might be the printer driver. Have you tried reinstalling the driver or
searching for an updated one?

Well the link you posted describes network printers, anyway, I uninstalled,
reinstalled and updated my printer driver - same problem, no change.

All fonts are working properly - truetype, opentype and postscript.
I have heard that Adobe Font Manager clashes with Word, so i uninstalled it
and the problem remained.

All fonts work in Word.
NO fonts work in Word when using Insert Symbol.

All fonts work in Excel.
All fonts work in Excel when using Insert Symbol.
I am using am currently using a workaround of finding the symbols i need in
Excel and then cutting and pasting them into Word. This does not crash Word,
but obviously not an ideal situation.

It still sounds like an incompatible printer driver. Please install a
different printer (any printer from the Windows standard installs such as
the LaserJet 6L) and set as the Windows default. Then test Word again.

But first, because of all the problems, close all applications and go to the
User Temp folder and empty it of all the abandoned temp files by deleting
all.

Are you able to use Insert/Symbol when you start Word in Safe Mode? Hold
Ctrl while starting Word, continue holding Ctrl until you are prompted to
start in Safe Mode.
