word document trying to be opened with excel

when i try to open any word document- my computer tries
to open it in with excel and obviously can't and displays
error- excel- "file format is not valid". I can still
open word documents by right clicking and use option to
open document with - word.

How do I stop my computer trying to open word documents
with excel.

i am using windows xp/professional

You need to "reregister" Word, that is, reestablish Word's "ownership" of
the .doc and .dot file extensions in the Windows Registry. To do this, press
the Start button on the Windows Taskbar and choose Run. In the box, type

winword /r

and press Enter (note the space before the "/r" switch). Word will not
start, and it may appear that nothing is happening (or you may get a message
that Word has been reregistered), but this should solve the problem. For

Try this,

Go to My Documents, Click Tools, and Folder Options and
then File Types. Then scroll down the list and look for
DOC extension. Highlight and in the bottom of the screen
it should tell you what program it opens with. If it is
not Word, click change, and select MS Word. Close and
restart, this should solve your problem.
