Word documents keep locking up

I'm having reoccurring problems with a 16 page word document it's a report
with 10 to 15 photos and I'm constantly saving the work as I progress but the
file constantly locks up on me typically need the end, any suggestions?

Which version of Word?

Operating system?

RAM?

16 pages is a short Word document. Try including the pictures as links
instead of embedding them directly in the document. Does that help?
