WORD Freezes

Heres my stiuation

Operating System: XP Professional with Office X
Using Mail Merge, Word will freeze while trying to locate a datafile. I run Ctrl + ALT Delete and try to end the application, then click the end now button and the Word window will remain open open but it states that it is not responding. I try to run the Ctrl + ALT Delete again and again and the same thing (or nothing happens). Then when I try to access My Computer from the Start Menu, a FLASHLIGHT looks in the My Documents folder and just searches. I have to then turn the computer off to fix the problem or I should say temporarily fix the problem until I try the Mail Merge datafile retrieval again.

Can anyone in this newsgroup tell me why that is happening or how to fix that problem

Are you using some type of automation to locate the datafile or are you
doing it manually?
