Word hangs when pasting HTML

Since setting up Word (Office XP) on my new PC, I am unable to paste HTML
without the app hanging. I tried using Normal layout instead of Print
layout, but it doesn't always prevent the hang.

It displays an IP address in the lower left of the app window. I am able to
close the app from the task bar.

Office is fully patched.

Sometimes, the HTML contains too much information for Word to handle, and
then it crashes. However, it should work if you choose to paste as
"Unformatted Text" (via Edit | Paste Special).

Pasting unformatted text does not paste everything I want. It's not always a
lot of information, either. You can see it's looking to the Internet because
of the IP address in the lower left hand corner of the app window.

This was not a problem on my last PC. This new installation of Office is
not working like before.

Of course, pasting as unformatted text limits your options, but sometimes it
is the best you can do.

However, usually the problem should occur only with more complex web pages.
Are you saying that Word crashes if you copy and paste from any web page?
Does it crash even if you paste a single line of text from the web?

No, not pasting a single line of text. But if it has a link or a photo, it
will crash. What is Word trying to do?

The frustrating part is that I didn't have this problem on my old PC.
what's different? I can't be the only one having this problem.

I'm not sure what Word is trying to do. For linked images, I think it is
trying to download the images.

Stefan, we have the same problem with Word 2007 and Word 2000 and are hoping
that Word 2010 will be more stable when pasting HTML into Word. Whether it
crashes or not appears to depend on the HTML being pasted.
