word locks when opening new file following windows xp update

i just did automatic updates to xp (a bunch of security fixes) and now when i
try to open a new file in word, word locks. if it try 'save as' it also
locks. it can open/save existing files ok. as long as the name doesn't
change.

the 'send error report' dialogue box said office service pack 3 for office
would fix this problem, so i installed that, but it did not help.

any ideas?

The problem is installed, rather than uninstalled, updates. Specifically, a
Windows update.

For immediate purposes, go to the Add/Remove programs control panel and
click on the box to show updates (top right). Down near the bottom are
Windows updates. You are looking for "Security Update for Windows XP
(KB908531)". Unistall this.

Keep reading these newsgroups and search for that number. You will see other
things you can do as well.

The update works for some people, including me, without problems for others
it causes the problems you are seeing.
