Word opening very slowly

We have two computers having this problem in our office. With nothing else
running and opening word from the desktop, Word will take about 20 seconds to
load a blank document. It will use 50% of the CPU during this time. We've
run a virus/adware scan and that didn't help. We use Windows XP Pro. All
other computers run pretty much the same programs and are not having this
problem. Does anyone have some suggestions?

Could be a host of things. Some places to start might be:

Run Disk Cleanup - Get rid of the Temp files
Run Defrag
Check the properties and see what the memory is showing - Max memory is best
and a cheap upgrade
BIOS upgrades?
Available Free Space on hard drive?

Once you eliminate any hardware issues, then focus on any software issues.
See how much is being loaded and startup and reduce the items to only
essentials. Eliminate any 'messenger' apps like AIM or MSM. Anything else
'open' in the Taskbar other than AntiVirus or Firewall?

Those all seem to be fine. I'm not sure what you mean by BIOS upgrades. Any
more suggestions.?

Don't mess with the BIOS if you don't know what you are doing. Seriously.
You could end up with a paperweight.
