Word Stops Working

I have MS Word 2007. I am able to open it and it works OK. It even saves OK.

However, when I close it, it gives me an error message that “Microsoft Word
has stopped working. Windows is checking for a solution to the problemâ€

The solution claims that HP is at fault and directs me to the HP site, where
I find absolutely nothing about an HP driver causing a problem with Microsoft
Word.

If I let it go long enough, it gives me another error message. This message
states:

“Word cannot open the file ~WRS{5560CC55-F915-4232-A2C3-F8CF449385FC}.tmp.
If the file is stored on the network, there may be a problem with the network
connection. If you can copy the file, try saving the file in another
location and opening it there.â€

I have no idea what or where this file is. I’ve done a search and have come
up empty.

I would appreciate a solution to this problem.

Thanks in advance.

About the same thing happening to me. I have an HP Pavillion dv9000 with a
bunch of HP preinstalled software that seems to have gotten tangled with my
printer driver, but I'll try unininstalling the "hp printer" driver. This
problem is the worst I've ever encountered from a Microsoft product, even if
it is HP's fault.

Try switching to a different default printer to see if it resolves the
problem.

First of all, Terry, I want to thank you because, thus far, it’s worked.

I do have a couple of questions which are going to expose my knowledge
limitations.

I switched to Microsoft XPS Document Writer. The printer I use for my
laptop is an HP C4280. I don’t know of any physical printer named Microsoft
XPS Document Writer. So when I hook this laptop back up to the hub that’s
located where I do much of my work, will the HP work or will I have to change
the default back to HP? If I do, will I experience the same problem with
Word?

Terry, I’ve looked through many of the Word problems in these threads and I
must say you’ve been Terry-on-the-spot with all of them. MS is very
fortunate that you’re helping its customers.

I have one other question about Word.

Not long ago I accidentally ran across a command which allowed Word to open
in the Draft view, which I prefer. As I came across this command
serendipitously, I can no longer find it. I’m sure you know exactly where it
is.

Thanks so much for the timely help, Terry.

Thank you.

You are correct that there is no physical XPS printer: what it does is save
in a secure OPEN Document format (see
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/features/xps.aspx ). When you
reconnect to your network, you will need to switch Word to the HP printer
when you need to print. If you immediately switch back to the XPS driver, it
will stop Word erroring when you close down again. This is unfortunately, a
long-standing HP bug that they don't seem to want to fix.

If you mean, where is the command? It is on the View Ribbon, last command in
the Document Views Group. If you want this automatically, I am not aware
that there is a command line switch to open Word 2007 in Draft View. It
certainly isn't published in any of Microsoft's help files - but I do
believe that there are some unpublished switches. I can only suggest that
you create an AutoOpen macro that switches Word into Draft View, presuming
that you always want to open in Draft View. If you only want Draft View when
you launch Word on its own, create the macro and then edit the command line
to run the macro using the /mmacroname switch. So you will need one of the
following macros...

Sub AutoOpen()
ActiveWindow.View = wdNormalView
End Sub

Sub AutoNew()
ActiveWindow.View = wdNormalView
End Sub

Note that Word normally opens up a document in the View in which it was
saved. But in Word 2007, you have to set the option to allow Word to open in
Draft View. It is under Word Options, Advanced Tab (Alt+F, I, A) under the
General Heading. If you check that and always save in Draft Mode, there
should only be need to create an AutoNew macro to ensure that all new
documents open in Draft View.

Thank you very much for your help. I was on the phone with Microsoft support
for almost 3 hours and they couldn't help me with this. I even tried the
other suggestion of deleting the data folder, this worked for about a day and
the error came back. I never would have thought it was my printer. There
are so many people out there with this problem you would think someone could
come up with a solution other than changing our default and "tricking" our
computers.

Anyway, thank you very, very much!
