I typed a document and pasted a photo at the center. I wanted a diagonally
colored background. I have already checked the Background Colors and Images,
but it won't remain checked nor will it print the background. Why?

In Word 2002 or older, a background inserted with "Format | Background" is
designed to be viewed on screen and on web pages, but it is not designed to
be printed. A workaround would be to insert a rectangle or text box
formatted as behind text, no border, and filled with the background of your
choice.
