Could you explain yourself a little better? Do you *really* mean memory
(RAM) or do you mean hard drive space?

yes, its all my ram being used.

The longer I use Word the more memory is seems to consume.
The way I tell is by clicking: ctrl-alt-delete then <task
manager> followed by <Processes>
When I click on <mem usage> column, it sort all items by mem
usage and it shows that word runs up to very large numbers.

if i work on a document (without pictures or sometimes with the
odd small picture/figure!) for say 30 minutes, the computer get
very slow and then when I check mem usage....... to my
astonishment it seems that by far the biggest amount goes to
word.

I can save the document, but when I click on Close, it hangs.
Hence I am mystified as to what is going on and what I can do to
remedy this? Do you have any ideas?

Hmm... I'm running 2003 and I've just fired it up and the usage is about
40.6MB. If you compare this with Paint Shop Pro 8, it's about a third of the
RAM that the latter application uses. What version are you running? Word is
third in my list (at the moment I have PSP8 and PS8 running, and graphics
apps always use a lot). High memory usage doesn't tend to cause slowdowns
though, that's usually the CPU - is Word consuming many clock cycles? Are
you up to date on your Essential System Maintenance (defrag, checkdisk,
checking for spyware, virus checking, etc)? I would do a full maintenance
scan and see if that doesn't help. Is your virus checker up to date? There's
no point in scanning with an out of date checker. I would suggest
downloading Spybot from www.safer-networking.org and running a system-wide
scan. I'd also run a system-wide virus scan. Also, have you updated Office
and Windows lately (I assume, from your description you're either running
Windows 2000 or XP)? I would make sure you're up-to-date on all updates.
Other than that, I don't really know what to suggest.

What version of Word are you using?
I know that several versions had memory problems like that.
When memory was used and then freed, the app would forget to
mark it as free, so the next thing into RAM got new space,
thinking the old space was still used. Depending on how
much Undo you have, and how large the things you've undone
are, for example, would eat up RAM pretty quickly,
especially if you didn't have lots and lots of RAM. Normal
buffering etc. would use up RAM in a couple of hours for our
secretaries; they did a lot of swearing at it.
As I recall, you had to exit Word and restart it in order
to reclaim the lost memory. I wonder if MS has a KB article
on that? I know it's OK in OXP, dunno at what point it got
fixed. Oh yeah, I think it got fixed in 98 if you have a
full set of all the updates. Anyway ... hth
