Word2004 formats all the text when I mark just some of it

An example of what happens:
- I have a document with a lot of text
- I want to put a sentence in bold, and thus mark it
- I press command+B (or the button B on the formatting palette)
- The entire text, i.e. the entire document, becomes bold
- I regret by pressing command+Z
- the text I marked turns bold, and the rest goes back to the way it was before...IF I am lucky. Sometimes other text that has been bold goes normal also.

Why, oh why?? What can I do to make it format the parts that I mark and nothing more?

Go to Format>Style, make sure "Normal" is selected in the list, then click
on the Modify button. In the new window, disable 'Automatically update' and
tick 'Add to Template'. Click on OK, then on Apply, and the problem should
be gone.
