WordArt

Mary

When I try to edit my WordArt it comes up and says Publisher can not launch or communicate with OLE server program. I have done this many times in the past with no problem. I uninstalled Publisher and reinstalled it and it still won't work. Any help I can get is greatly appreciated.

Mary go to www.microsoft.com/data and download and install the latest MDAC
Components.

Your WordArt should work after installing the MDAC update and then
re-booting.

Post back if you have any more problems.

Go to this file and double click on it:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\wordart\WRDART32.REG
Then answer YES
Then re-boot your computer and WordArt should now work.

I downloaded the latest MDAC and rebooted. At first I thought it was
working and I was so happy. It let me open a new document and actually do
the curved artwork. But, then as I tried to save it, it came up blank with
the same thing "cannot launch or communicate with the OLE server program.
Now what do you suggest I do?

I went to Program Files/Common Files/Microsoft Shared/wordart and could not find the file WRDART32.REG

Mary Mary quite contrary how does your garden grow?

Well Mary, you must have the files hidden.

Mary dear, go in Explorer to menu Tools > Folder Options > View then click
on SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS.
Now, you should be able to see that file.

had better tell you what I did yesterday morning. I went into my Registry and
deleted the following:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/CLSID/{000212F0-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\LocalServer32
That could be the reason it doesn't show. That was also suppose to take care of
it, and it didn't. I did call a computer place and he said I probably needed to
reformat and put my Operating System back on. Anymore suggestions for this dear
Mary? By the way, my garden isn't growing very well, could it be that I didn't plant
one? :~)

M

Mary

Yes, I reinstalled it. Just in case, I just uninstalled and reinstalled it again. Still doesn't work. I can do the box and write the text in it but when I save it I only get an empty box. If I double click it I get this panel that says "Insert Object" and ask for the type. I have tried about all of them with no luck. Any suggestions you may have will be greatly appreciated.

Mary if you go to the menu INSERT then down to OBJECT and you scroll down
till you get 'Microsoft WordArt 3.0' and see if it works from there.

That will allow us to know where we are heading with your problems.

M

Mary

OK, I did what you said. Again I was able to type in the box and I saved it, opened it up and only had the box. Double clicked it and got the Object selection, clicked on wordart again and got the cannot lauch or communicate with the OEL server program.

Mary hmmmm did your mother ever tell you what a problem child you were!!!

I would suggest you delete ALL the files here:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\wordart\

Then just re-install Publisher over the top to replace them.
The file WRDART32.EXE has been known to go corrupt.

Lets hope this fixes you up.

I was a good child until I grew up! I guess I am a problem. I did what you said. It deleted all but WRDART32.exe. Said it was being used by windows. I went ahead and reinstalled again anyway, and guess what? It still doesn't work. Still the same thing. Now my question is "How do I delete it if windows is using it?

OK. It still isn't fixed but you can be proud of me. I answered my own question on how to delete WRDART32.exe if Windows was using it. I went into safe mode, deleted it and then reinstalled. I was so sure it was going to work but nothing has changed. When I go into Properties the description is "WordArt 3.0 OLE Server for Windows 95." I am using Windows ME and my disc is Office 97. Is there a problem here somewhere? I have used it before many, many times

Mary Mary you are turning my hair grey. Next thing you will be hearing from my lawyer!!!

Mary I am sure you are not *all* bad. You must have some good redeeming features.

If you like, I live just down the road from you and then across the pond, so do you want to bring your computer around and I will fix it in five minutes for you. If you go past that large tree at the end of the road you have gone to far and passed my place.

I know what your problem is - trust me.

Obviously you are reasonably bright, and you are obviously familiar with digging around the Registry.

Go into the Registry and find all the WordArt references you can. You will find in one place there will be 2 strings the same or the error below.

256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SYMPTOMS
When you run a Publisher PageWizard Design Assistant or attempt to insert a WordArt object in a Publisher file, you receive the following error message:

Publisher cannot launch or communicate with the OLE server program needed to complete this task.
You may still be able to insert WordArt text effects using other Microsoft Office 97 programs.
CAUSE
The Office 97 programs include a set of special text effects referred to as WordArt. These WordArt text effects are different from the objects created by the WordArt program that ships with Microsoft Publisher and earlier versions of Microsoft Office.

Publisher uses a Registry key to locate the WordArt program file (Wordart32.exe). If that key is missing, or contains the wrong path, then you will not be able to insert WordArt into Publisher.
RESOLUTION
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

1.. On the Windows Start menu, click Run.
2.. In the Open box, type Regedit, and then click OK.
3.. In the left pane of the Registry Editor window, select the following Registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{000212F0-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
\LocalServer32
Press DELETE.
4.. On the Registry menu, click Exit.
5.. Insert the Publisher Setup disk 1 or the Publisher compact disc into the appropriate drive.
6.. On the Windows Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
7.. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
8.. On the Install/Uninstall tab, double-click Microsoft Publisher 97 or Microsoft Publisher 95.
9.. In the Maintenance Mode dialog box, click Reinstall and follow the instructions on the screen.

I don't know how grey your hair is by now but mine is beyond grey. I get so excited thinking this will work. Then it doesn't and I am sad. I did everything you said to do. I was in the HKEY and deleted MS WordArt and MS WordArt2. Also went back and deleted the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\ and so on like I did before. Restarted computer and does exacually the same thing as it as been doing.

Would it be easier to e-mail back and forth or is this the way to go?
