Works File Convert

Dave Tucker

Hi,

I have a friend who used to have Works and created the
files (.wks, .wdb) I think these are Works Spread Sheet
& Works Data Base Files respectively.

He no longer has that PC or those programs but now has
Office (Word, Access, Excel, etc.)

How can we open these file in Office and recover the data
from those Works files?

We have already tried to open them in Access, Word and
Excel and all programs suggest the files are invalid
formats.

Idea????

Thanks,

Dave

It depends on the versions of Works and Office, which you neglected to post.

Easiest way I've found is to open them on a computer with Works and
resave as something more compatible.

Milly,

I did not post the versions because he does not know.
Like I said, it was a PC he no long has so we can not
find out. All I know is the file are from MS Works he
said is about 4 years old.

However, I am not sure the version is the important
aspect of the problem.

What I need to know is what options are available for
converting these files to Word, Excel, and Access? I did
already downloaded and installed the available converters
which did not work.

I am looking for any other idea's.

Thanks,

Dave

Hi Dave,

For the Works database files there isn't a MS converter.
The 'usual' method is to save from inside Works into a
dBase or Comma Seperated Value format and those can be
read into Access:

For converting spreadsheets to Excel, the spreadsheet format
in newer versions of MS Works (v6 and up) can be read by Excel.
The older ones do not have a MS converter available, the procedure
being to save in Excel format from within MS Works, but you may
be able to use the 3rd party one here if you'd rather not install
or purchase a copy of MS Works v7.
http://www.rl-software.com/ms-works.html

or, there is a capability to import Works Spreadsheets into Access.

I was able to use Quick View Plus to open a works database file (wdb
and copy the contents to an Excel spreadsheet. You can download
30-day fully functional trial version of Quick View Plus from thei
website (www.avantstar.com) or(http://tinyurl.com/2avvq)
