WSS permissions override / change from custom permission

All,

I posted a while back about tihs, thought we had just did something wrong.
I manually corrected everything, then one of my users reported the problem
again. Upon further research I have found this.

In Project Workspace Provisioning Settings I had it set to auto-sync. I
understand that it will set permissions when project is published. That
worked fine. I did overlook that fact that it would update these settings
everytime the project was published. :-( BUT... here is the question...

I have created a custom permission level giving some different access than
the Project Manager permission level. I gave this permission to all of my
project managers.

As projects were published they were all removed from the custom permission
level and set back to a project manager level. What is the point of me
creating a custom permission level if it is going to override it each time.

Also, I am confused as to why it let my executives have project manager
rights.

Can someone assist me on how I should have my settings so that my project
managers have the custom level permissions? What is the pros and cons of
turning off/on of AutoSync?

Thanks!

Hello,

Auto sync feature in PWA maintain the permissions of your project team
on Project Workspace. You are correct, these permissions will be check
and syncronized at project publish.

If you want to have custom security permissions independent of PWA,
you have to create the new group and add the users. If you do this,
permissions defined on custom group will be retained and will not be
impacted by project publish.

Please refer the following example on my website:

Can you be more specific as to what you mean by custom permission level? Do
you mean in Manage Groups in PWA>Server Settings or are you talking about a
permission level within the project workspaces?

If you are asking about executives being added to the Project Managers
(Microsoft Office Project Server) role, then this is probably due to them
having the "Save Project" permission enabled on the project.

Hi Jonathan,

Thank you for your response.

The executive group I'm referring to is in Manage Groups - PWA Server
Settings group. Thank you for asking this question. This is what my issue
is. All other groups that have similar rights, have Projects Save only on
the personal Projects category not on the Group setting category. (What I'm
trying to say is...)

PM's have
Category PM Permissions Project Save not checked
Personal Projects Project Save checked

Executives have
Category Executive Permissions Project Save checked
Personal Projects Project Save checked.

And there isn't any reason to have the Executive Permission level to set to
Project Save with the way our organization works. I just made a mistake in
my logic when setting up this category.

I appreciate you helping me see what I did incorrectly.

What I also learned here was how the auto-sync worked in that it over-rode
the custom permission level I created on the WSS and used the defaults. That
coupled with my mistake on the PWA permission settings really had me
confused.

Now to just hope I am finally over the learning curve of understanding all
the permission interlinks. :)

This board has been invaluable in helping me to come up to speed quickly!

Thanks to all!

Well I'm glad you were able to resolve your issues and cleared up your
understanding of how the system works when it comes to WSS permissions and
PWA permissions.

Thanks for comments!
