“Insert Autotext†problem

B

Bob in AZ

Am using Word 2003.
Under VIEW/ HEADER & FOOTER, there is a box to insert page numbers etc.
On the left side of this box is INSERT AUTOTEXT.
This is grayed out. How to get this to work so I can insert the file name?

G'day Bob in AZ <[email protected]>,

AutoText is not what you want. Stick your cursor where you want it and
Insert > Fields > Filename. It is grayed out because you haven't
defined any autotext in the templates in use.

Autotext entries are filed under the paragraph styles that pertained when
they were saved. For the insert autotext drop down to work in the
header/footer view there must be entries saved with the header/footer
paragraph style. To insert other autotexts you'll need to use the Word main
insert > autotext menu.

This is total nonsense, Steve, because (a) both FILENAME and FILENAME \p
fields are defined as AutoText entries in the Header/Footer style (available
via the AutoText menu on the Header and Footer toolbar) and (b) these
entries are stored in Normal.dot and consequently are available to all
documents.

And if no entries are available, it could be that Normal.dot has been
overwritten with another document or template.

Can you access AutoText entries via Insert | AutoText? That is, are there
submenus listed? If not, open Insert | AutoText | AutoText and see what is
selected for "Look in" (should be "All active templates"). If no AutoText
entries are listed, it may be that Normal.dot has been overwritten by a
document. See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm for tips on
renaming it to generate a fresh copy.

That would do it :)

Read Suzanne and Graham's responses. If that doesn't help, it may be that
you have defined your style at the insertion point as something other than
Header or Footer. As was pointed out, the entries in the AutoText menu are
style-sensitive and you want the style in your header or footer to be Header
or Footer or some style based on one of those.
