11.2.4 Upgrade, Now I can't open any applications.

I installed the 11.2.4 Upgrade last night. This morning I came in to
work, and fired up Entourage just fine, but then when I tried to open
Excel it would bounce several times, then bring up the error report
program. The same thing happened with Word. So I restarted and not only
is it still happening with Excel and Word, but now Entourage is
suffering from it. Any ideas here?

Here's the first part of the error report:

Help on the Way/Everything You Gather Is Just More That You Can Lose

Can we verify that this was a legitmate Microsoft upgrade?

I got an email the other day from an unknown source -- appeared to be
spam. The mysterious thing about it is that it could not be deleted --
when I tried, I got an Entourage error.

The next day I received a notice of update from Microsoft (odd
coincidence or speedy action?) -- upon installing it I was able to
delete the spam, but it mucked up my Safari Browser, and a few days
later my entire systsem crashed with no solution from Apple -- I had to
erase my hard disk (ouch!) and install everything from scratch! The
thing that has me mystified is that I had to reinstall Office X, and
when I went to the Microsoft/Mactopia site to get all the patches, that
latest one was NOT on the list! Anyone have confirmed info on this?

I installed the update last evening. Today can't open anything.
Bounces and then closes; gives an error report.

Tried using the "Remove Office" utility off the installation disk.
Same thing. I repaired permissions. Made no difference. Trashed all
of the Microsoft preferences in my user Library. No difference.
Reinstalled all of the apps off the installation disk. No difference.

To all:

One of the VPs at Microsoft responded to a similar complaint elsewhere
and speculated it might be "Apple's" problem.

I checked the other Macs in my office. None at 10.4.6 and below were
having this problem.

So I reinstalled the system software from the install disk, which
contained version 10.4.4.

After the installation, Word and Excel worked fine - upgrade and all.

I'm staying at 10.4.4 until I hear that Redmond and Cupertino have
reconciled the two upgrades.

Best regards,

Dave,

I also noticed discontinuity with your post of July 2, and that might
explain why no-one has responded yet. You need to keep the same thread
going.

Most (probably all) of the regulars here use newsreader software or
Entourage; either way, they will usually view by "Subject", or "Sent" then
by "Subject". If there is no continuity, most regulars will be too busy to
trace the origins of the post.

That said, I'm interested to find out what you think is being caused by the
10.4.7 update (I'm still on 10.4.3). ;-)

Cheers,

* SUGGESTION -- KEEP REVISITING AFTER YOU POST: If you post a question, keep
re-visiting the newsgroup for several days after the first response comes
in. Sometimes it takes a few responses before the best or complete solution
is provided; sometimes you'll be asked for further information. Good tips
about getting the best out of posting are at
http://word.mvps.org/Mac/AccessNewsgroups.html and
http://word.mvps.org/FindHelp/Posting.htm (if you use Safari you may see a
blank page and have to hit the circular arrow icon -- "Reload the current
page" -- two or more times).

The original post regarded multiple Office 2004 apps crashing post the
10.4.7 upgrade. Since I am experiencing a similar problem, I figure
I'll post it here as well.

After I first installed the 10.4.7 upgrade and rebooted, every Office
app would crash on opening. After a subsequent reboot Entourage, Excel,
and Powerpoint all stablized but not Word -- when opening an existing
document the application would begin to display the content and then
crash, bringing up the crash reporter. In system.log I see the
following:

/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/ATS.framework/Support/ATSServer:
FOExceptionMainHandler caught a fatal exception at 0x000bdb5c\n
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/ATS.framework/Support/ATSServer:
ATSServer got a fatal exception!! Please check /var/tmp/ATSServer_298.

both of which then repeat 26 more times, except the name of the
/var/tmp file increments with each message.

Today, for the first time, I get the same error reporting in system.log
but Word doesn't crash.

Very interesting thread. I have been running Office 2004 without
difficulty for several months. Immediately after running the 10.4.7
update, I went straight to "Corrupt Font Hell" and all the usual fixes
just don't seem to work. I have had the corrupt font disease before
and thought I had it licked, but now this. Am I correct is speculating
that 10.4.7 might be breaking Office in several different ways?
