1500 page Publisher document won't open

A

AKK

I have created a large Publisher document...three times, no less, and can't
get the document open after closing it. The message I get says: Publisher
can't open this document.

What's going on? HELP. I am tired of typing this thing...Ü

Considering I've never seen a dialog box that says "Publisher can't open
this document", I suspect it says a bit more.

What version of Publisher are you using? I also kind of doubt that you've
retyped 1500 pages three times. I'd bet you've done something a bit simpler.
What did you do to create a document this large?

Do you have Word? If you do, file, open, files of type, recover text from any
document.

I also recommend trying to open your back up file that you created.

Jo Ann, thanks for replying...you are right about the retyping. When I worked
on the document, I would save it every day. When I would do additional work,
I would open the smaller document, rename it and work on the file. The
largest document file contains 61.2 Mgs and will not open.

I saved K-9th the first time and then through 11th grade the next time.
Yesterday, I tried inserting 12th grade again for the 4th time and Publisher
simply won't open the larger file. The exact words on the pop up message
are: “Publisher cannot open the file.â€

Adding more info to the document simply won't allow Publisher to open the
file. Are there a maximum number of pages Publisher 2003 will save?

I need this project completed over the week end so it can go to the printer
next week. Additional info would be helpful. Thanks in advance!

Jo Ann, I am creating a new curriculum guide for the California Department of
Education...that's why the document is so large.

Thanks again for your help.

I don't know of a file size limitation but that means just that - that I
don't know of any. I've never worked on a 61MB Pub file.

Try starting in Safe Mode. *Maybe* you can free up enough resources to allow
you to open the file one more time and then break that file up into
sections.

(This may or may not work. I talked to my husband who had a similar issue
with Excel. He had spreadsheets that hit over 200MB and wouldn't open
regardless of what he tried. At that point he had no choice but to delete
the file. He said it's worth trying but he's not holding out much hope. I
figure nothing ventured, nothing gained.)

Mary, I saved the 61 Mg document to a cd and my husband tried opening it on
his office computer at his university. He got the same message.

As to the virus: I have an agreement with McAfee on -ine for my virus
protection program. They update often, so IF there is a virus on my PC,
McAfee can't find it. I have used Spybot Search and Destroy, Spy Sweeps, CW
Shredder and AVG 6.0 to locate spyware and they all say I am clean...any
other suggestions on finding an underlying problems that may not allow the
larger document to open?

Thank you for replying...

Thank you, Jo Ann and to your husband, too! Ü

Making smaller files and labeling them different grade levels would work,
but when it's printed, all the page numbers will be wrong for the table of
contents. Is there a way to number each of the documents with consecutive
page numbers so those will match the table of contents?

Thanks again...

Yes, use Insert > Section in later versions of Publisher, Tools > Options in
earlier versions of Publisher.

You can use a PDF application to join these documents together.

J

JoAnn Paules

Yes, Insert|Section.

I didn't suggest you had a virus, but virus software can interfere with opening some
Publisher documents especially if you have script blocking enabled. I understand
McAfee does have this option. As for opening the publication at a different location,
if you tried to open it from the CD you will have problems. Have your husband copy it
to the hard drive and then try to open it.

Publisher files can be as large as 2 gigabytes or more. Publisher creates temp files,
if your temp folder is full or even if your swap file is too small...
If all computers were created equal...

I will try the Insert > Section and see if I can finish this GOSH DARN

If David A. were here, he would recommend Serif PP10, a new version that
has a book feature. It combines whatever files you want into one
publication, then lets you do a TOC or Index.

Brian Kvalheim [MSFT MVP]

That would be a horrible recommendation considering Serif products can't
open her 1500 page Publisher publication to combine them :). If someone
started with Serif to begin with, that would be an excellent option.

Considering that 90% of Publisher users have Microsoft Word, users can
create a TOC and Index in Publisher via Edit > Story in Microsoft Word.

JoAnn and Ed, yet another problem...Inserting page numbers after 4-6 grades
(in 7 and 8), Publisher will not let me start numbering pages with 1032.
(High school will be even higher numbers.) It tells me it has to be a whole
number (no, duh?--Ü) between 1-1000. Now what????

Thanks again for helping me with this problem...

I think the workaround was to set the numbering higher in an older version
of Publisher and import the file.

I have discovered a way to hack the Publisher file so that it will start
numbering on any page between -32767 and +32767.

Let me know which number you need and I can create a file that starts with
that page number. :)

Ed, thanks...for 7 and 8th grade, I need it to start with 1032. Haven't
looked at HS so I am not sure what number it needs to start with...will look
at the document and see how high I need!

Thanks!!!!!!
