I am presently scanning in a european text book which
instead of "or" uses << or >> but as one digit any
suggestions on how I can get find to locate them and
change to inverted commas

It's hard to know exactly what symbol the OCR software inserted. You
might be able to copy the phrase from the text and paste it into the
search dialog box. If that doesn't work, try entering ascii codes
Alt+0171 for « and Alt+0187 for » into the search dialog box. You enter
an ascii code by holding down the Alt key and while keying the 4-digit
number from the numeric keypad at the right side of the keyboard. The
number keys at the top of the keyboard don't work for this.
